Cape Verde islands

The fascination of the Cape Verde islands is the variety of environments, from a lunar landscape in which  vegetation appears as ribbons of green, scattered here and there,  by a capricious hand, to islands with luxuriant tropical vegetation as the name Cape Verde could only mean.
The sea bed around  these islands is  rich in coral and marine life and as described by Jacque Cousteau, one of major underwater explorers, “…like the garden of the Eden of the Africans coasts bathed from the Atlantic”.
The geographic position of  the archipelagos, situated in  the main  ocean currents, makes its waters particularly rich in life.
"Media" says: " Cape Verde's archipelago is one of the last uncontaminated paradises of our planet.
A handful of islands in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, where tourism still adapts to the natural rhythms and characteristics".

Sal Island
Sal is very dry. Over time extensive erosion  has made it almost completely flat even  though it is of volcanic origin.
With it's elongated shape from north to south and a maximum length of around 30 km and a width, from east to west  less than 12 km, the total area of Sal is 216 km2.
Sal international airport, is the main entrance to the Cape Verde archipelago.
The salt pans at Pedra De Lume are the most picturesque place on Sal.
They are located on the floor of an extinct volcanic crater. Fissured rock of the crater permits sea water from over a km distance to filter up through the crater floor filling the pans and providing a natural source of salt.
In 1804 a tunnel was excavated through the wall of the crater to allow for easier extraction of the salt.
Salt pans located near the town of St Maria in the south of the island, though now not in use, are also worth a visit Espargos is tha main town on the island and derives it’s name from a form of asparagus that grows in the vicinity.
Palmeira is the port of Sal and boasts a desalinisation plant and lobster farms all of which are worth a visit.
Other sites worth visiting are Algodeiro, a small oasis, Buracona, a natural pool with water that is constantly replenished by the tide, Fontona, Puf, Danfior e Calheta Funda.
Close to the old lighthouse, Fiura is good place to  experience the force of the waves and to fish a for a great variety of species.
Sal is one of the islands closest to the African Continent, that is why it has the same climatic conditions as those, on the same latitude, of that part of the continent, because it is situated in a zone where the Northeast winds predominate and increase in intensity until July, Cape Verde has a milder climate than those neighbouring countries located on the same latitude.”
