New entry February 2010 From March 2010 the dive centres equipment was been enriched by the provision of Cressi 5mm wetsuits in a variety of sizes The dive staff have been very impressed with the new suits and we think all visiting divers will agree. Whale season starts in January 2010
Every year during the winter months starting in January through to early spring humpback whales often accompanied by their calves can be seen in the waters around the Island of Sal. We have already seen a couple of whales from the dive boat. Sometimes they can even be seen from shore as the deeper waters around the Island are only a few hundred meters from the coast. Underwater sightings are rare although on many dives it is possible to hear them “singing”. On some rare occasions where they are seen during a dive it is impossible to describe the emotions felt.
Operation Turtle Rescue November 2009
We have been involved in an operation to rescue a turtle that incredibly was dying from asphyxia. Unlike fish turtles have to surface to breathe. Sometimes turtles become trapped inside caves with exits blocked which causes them to die from asphyxiation. During a dive in the cave of Regona a group of divers, led by dive master Góis discovered a caretta turtle which has now become affectionately named, Alice. She was clearly disorientated and unable to find her way out. Góis realizing the urgency of the situation immediately took her towards the exit where she swam quickly to the surface to breathe. Every year we see dead turtles in this and other caves so this year we are happy that at least one, Alice, was saved. The history of Kwarcit-Boris
Kwarcit-Boris was a Russian ship carrying illegal immigrants from Senegal to the Canary Islands. The boat was reaching the end of its life and moving off the island of Sal in Cabo Verde. As it left the island its engines became seriously damaged and it was towed into the port of Palmeira, where it was possible to rescue the passengers and crew members. After careful analysis it was clear that the ship was no longer suitable for any kind of navigation and in agreement with the Harbour on the island of Sal they decided to sink the ship and create an artificial reef. So after stripping the vessel of any dangerous material, on 26 January 2006 the ship was sunk at the tip of the island on the southwest. The wreck has been left clearly visible standing upright on the seabed. The Kwarcit-Boris now sits in full glory for all explorers to view at a minimum depth of 18m down to a maximum of 30m. The wreck measures 35m in length. After more than four years the ship has been completely colonized by marine life and is now a dive amongst the most beautiful in the area and continues to attract all divers. September 2009 Turtles die of suffocation: During the last dive in the “ Langosta verde” Cave we found the remains of two turtles. The poor creatures, probably entered the cave during the night, lost their bearings and died through suffocation. Their shells will remain in the cave. September 2009
During an amazing dive on Choclassa we met a huge ocean manta ray. We sighted it from the surface and it accompanied us circling around us for over half the dive. Fantastic!! August 2009 unexpected meeting
For two weeks six huge stingrays stationed themselves at the caves of Regona. These fantastic animals were on the bottom, side by side, creating an enormous living carpet. During the penetration of the caves the stingrays followed us throughout the dive. Friday 3 July 2009 Last week, the turtles began to lay their eggs in the beaches of Sal.
The season has officially begun! The first four nests were encountered by www.sostartarugas.org rangers.
