Sal Island
The island is very dry, with extensive erosion that has made it
completely flat even if it is of vulcanic origin.
with it's elongated shape, it has from north to south it's maximum lenghtof
around 30 km meanwhile, from east to west it does not reach 12 km. The
total
area i 216 kmq.
The international airport, is the main entrace to th archipelago.
The most picturesque place on the island is Pedra De Lume, crater of an
antique volcano, where you can find an artificial tunnel excavated in
1804
to allow the extraction of salt. The base of the crater,which is at sea
level, allows the surfacing of marine water even if it is at 1 km from
the
beach.
The saline of St. Maria, about 1 km from the city, even if not in use,
are
still a site worth visiting, as well as Vila de Espargos, whose name comes
from the spontaneous vegetation of that area.
The port o Palmeira, which allow container ships to anchor, has a
desalinizzazione systemand a lobster breeding.
Other sites worth visiting are Algodeiro, a small oasis, Buracona, a natural
pool with water that is constantely renewed, Fontona, Puf, Danfior e Calheta
Funda.
Close to the old lighthouse, Fiura is good place to admire the force of
the
waves and to fish a great variety of fish.
Sal is one of the islands closest to the African Continent,
that is why
it has the same climatic conditions as those, on the same latitude,
of that
part of the continent.
